Bradford City v Ripon City Ladies

By Chris Routledge

This was Womens Football Weekend and Bradford were in County Cup action. Having received a bye in the first round along with Ripon City, it was both teams’ first county cup action this season.

The game was played on the artificial surface at Woodhouse Grove School as their normal home pitch at Eccleshill United had not recovered from the midweek battle against Leeds Utd Ladies.

The game started as expected with Bradford pressing and after five minutes the ball was in the back of the Ripon net, only to be ruled out for offside. City kept the pressure up having most of the ball and chances, only to be held at bay by a very organised Ripon defence.

The breakthrough came from an Ellie Prothero cross whipped in from the left wing and struck home by striker Falone Sumaili. This was to set the pattern for the game, Ripon defending well and Bradford attacking.

Ripon held out until just before half time when Bradford doubled their lead with an identical goal from the Prothero Sumaili link. The only down side of the first half was influential midfielder Jemma White suffering an injury and having to be substituted.

Half time 2-0

Early in the second half Bradford were forced into making their remaining substitutions, welcoming Chelsea Stanford back after injury along with Amelia Hunt.

They came out of the blocks quickly and within five minutes Beth Shepherd and Harriet Jakeman both scored, putting the tie out of reach of Ripon.

However another unfortunate injury to Stanford saw her comeback only lasting 15 minutes meaning Bradford had to see out the last 30 minutes with 10 players.

Ripon did compete more with the numerical advantage but Bradford still were on top and in the remaining time Sumaili completed her hat trick and Masie Norde fired in from 25 yards out.

This was a comprehensive win for Bradford and if not for such a well drilled Ripon defence and poor finishing the winning margin would have been greater.

On this display no doubt Ripon will have a good season but it will be Bradford who go into the draw for round three of the County Cup.

Full time 6-0
