A number of Bradford City WFC players have taken the opportunity in this latest lockdown to keep fit and raise money for charities by taking part in running challenges.
Defender Ellie Prothero started things off for Cancer Research UK. After setting an initial target of £300 as she aimed to run 150 miles in 28 days, she smashed that before even setting off, and has so far raised almost £2,700, with an additional 59 miles clocked up for good measure.
As talk begins of a return to football at the end of March three more of the squad have laced up their trainers for good causes. City's dynamic duo of captain Katy Woodcock and player/coach Charlotte Stuart headed out on March 1st to begin their efforts to raise over £500 for two charities by completing 22 x 5k runs on consecutive days.
The beneficiaries of Charlotte & Katy's great work will be Young Minds UK, and a cause very close to many Bradford City hearts - One In A Million. Katy is very aware of the need to support the mental health and wellbeing of younger generations, she said: “As we work closely with children and young people, we are in such a privileged position to be a part of their childhood journey - each one, unique and special.
“But we also witness some of these children and young people go through the most challenging and testing times of their life. We have experienced first hand, the devastating outcomes that poor mental health can do to our young people and their families. The charities that we are fundraising for do amazing work to help and support our future generation”. At the time of writing, they have just passed their £500 target, after only three days.
City Reserves captain Ellie Edwards is also challenging herself this month, the great-granddaughter of Bradford City icon Bryan Edwards is hoping to raise £1,000 for Alzheimers research by completing 150 miles through March. Alzheimers and Parkinsons diseases are close to Ellie's heart, she said: "'I am raising money for Alzheimers (in memory of) my great-granddad Bryan who was in the 1958 FA Cup winning side for Bolton and did numerous jobs for Bradford City including manager, assistant manager, physiotherapist. I also want to do this as I know more research is needed so I have decided to do 150 miles in 31 days to raise enough money to go towards this cause". Ellie is already up to nearly £300.
First team manager Chris Hames is rightly proud of his players: "What the girls have set out to achieve is fantastic. They have shown selflessness, and determination to set ambitious and challenging targets, for such special causes, whether that be One in a Million, Young Minds and The Alzheimer’s Society, and all the work already done for Cancer Research UK.
"Katie & Charlotte, Ellie and Taff (Prothero) are great role models, and we fully support what they have set out to achieve, and I have no doubt they will smash their targets. Hopefully the full Bradford family can support these worthy causes where they can".
