Bolton Wanderers v Bradford City
By Chris Routledge
This week was another away day for the Bantams and another artificial pitch due to Bolton’s normal venue suffering from the weather. City were still under strength due to injuries and interim coach Charlotte Stuart had limited options to choose from.
Prior to the game the teams lined up for Remembrance Sunday 2 minutes silence.
The game started with Bolton making good use of the wide pitch and with the sun coming down it was not easy to pick up the crosses from the Bolton wide players. The home side profited from this as a ball came in from the left winger that wasn’t cleared which lead to it being prodded home from 5 yards out.
Bolton doubled their lead after the referee gave a free kick in the centre circle that was chipped over the defence and squeezed home between the post and keeper.
Bolton’s final goal of the half and the match as it turned out, was one of the most unusual ones City had conceded for some time. From a corner, the ball was headed towards the goal, it was cleared from under the bar by a combination of left back Beth Shepherd and keeper Aimee Routledge, but the referee’s assistant had his flag up, thinking the flag was up for an off side decision Routledge put the ball on the floor to restart the game only to be told the flag was up due to the ball crossing the line!
Half time 3-0
The second half saw a couple of substitutions - Zoe Roberts and Jemma White both came on to try gain control of the midfield.
This changed the game and now it was City on top, pushing Bolton back, by the time City had introduced their third sub the game was getting much more competitive with City bossing the game, the pressure told, a Bolton player lashed out at City defender Katy Woodcock and saw red. Outnumbered and under pressure the Bolton keeper was the only reason the score wasn’t closer, pulling off a couple of fine saves.
City are at home to Leeds Utd in midweek and will hope for this second half performance to be a starting point for that game.
Full time 3-0
