Doncaster Belles U16's  5-2   Bradford City U16s  (C)

                                            Emma Dobson 2

The last time City U16s played Doncaster was the very first game of the season and after been beaten 9-1 it was obvious things needed to improve. A good way to see the progress of your team is to play the team that beat you again. And so we go to Doncaster for the return fixture, but  with 2 key players missing.

Spirits were high and although the day was damp and cold, the Girls were very much up to the challenge. The game started off very ragged with control of the ball on both sides being hampered by a bobbly pitch. But City held their own and although Belles had most of the play managed to increase their push on the Belles goal the more the half progressed. Belles pressure paid off with a goal after 15mins. Belles breaking through City's defence with a through ball from midfield. City responded straight away and after getting a corner, Emma (Doby) Dobson cleverly volleyed home her first goal of the season after a poor clearance from the Belles defence.
Belles made it 2-1 when Cheryl slipped while in control of the ball, letting  their winger in to finish with and excellent strike, flying over TLucy's stretching arms. Belles then made it 3-1 just before half time, the belles forward finishing well from and excellent move.

The 2nd half started off exacty at the tempo that was to run through the period. City had their tails up and came out with a mission and dominated the half, causing the Belles defence many problems. Emma could have made it 3-2 when she found herself on for goal only to miss blaming a bobble on the pitch. Unfortunately, due to the forward pressure, City came unstuck when Belles hit them on the break and with ref missing what appeared to be an offside, Belles made it 4-1. City maintained the pressure and had most of the ball, but once again, Belles hit them on the break to make it 5-1. City weren't giving up and soon after Emma got her 2nd of the game with a lovely move started by Bryony in midfield to Becky on the wing, who teased the Belles defence crossing the ball for emma to slot home passed a well beaten keeper. City continued to push and even hit the post from a dribbling run from Lauren.

City may have been beaten once again by Belles, but progress has been made and will continue to be.  Well done Girls.

Winning can become a habit and if the girls can perform as they did in the 1st half, then the rest of the season should be a good one.
It was obvious from the very start who was the stronger team. City played the ball around and created chance after chance within the first 15mins. Chelsey Faulkner (top scorer for the past 2 years) found herself in front of goal, with some good running on to well time through balls, only to shoot wide or had her shot stopped by the keeper. The first goal came when Sarah finding herself in a similar position, calmly found the net. This seemed to spur Chelsey into life (as if she ever needs to) and the first half turned in to a competition as to who could score more. Half time came as respite for shell shocked Huddersfield, with a score of 7-0. The Chelsey/Sarah battle standing at 3-3. The other goal coming from a superb 25yd strike from Midfielder, Bryony Wraith. Bryony taking her chance after some good passing along left found her in enough space to turn and shoot.

The 2nd half started off where the 1st left off  Goals coming from; Becky, turning the full back inside out, feigning to shoot with her right only to change to her left and lob it in to the far corner of the goal; Bryony again with a 25yd strike (becoming a habit !); Chelsey, finding herself one on one with the keeper, slotting it comfortable in the net (winning the battle with Sarah 4-3) and an OG coming with pressure from Kayley Moore.

Huddersfield took their chances, after changes had been made, found City's concertration wanting. But by that time, the game was already won. Another good performance with a good team spirit. Mind you, it usually is when you win!

30th September

York City U16's 2-3 Bradford City U16s (Cup: 1st Round)

                            Sarah feltham (2)

                            Becky Fickling

After the madness of last week, we managed to have a full squad (with the exception of Emma h. still out with a thumb problem).

From the very first kick, city showed that they were up for the challange this week. After two defeats, they were not in the mood for a third. City dominated the half, but failed to find the back of the net, with the ever reliable Chelsey Faulkner not quite firing on full. The score after the first 15mins could have easily been 5-0. Alas it was not. Until a ball from midfield found Sarah on side. Sarah, holding off the determinations of the York defender, calmly slotted the ball in to the right hand corner of the goal. The game saw York finding space behind the City defence and on a few occasions, troubled the City goal. Lucy Green, however was in no mood to let anything passed her. The 2nd came from a corner. Again Sarah was there, this time to head it home. The end of the first half saw York nearly grab one back with an excellent shot from the 18yd box, only to see it swotted away for a corner by Lucy.

The 2nd half started the way of the first, when after 10mins, Becky found herself with only the keeper to beat and sweetly slipped the ball passed her to get her first of the season. This only seemed to motivate York, and for much of the latter part of the game, City found themselves on the ropes. All this coming after York got a goal back after beating Jade at her near post. The goal seemed to shake City, and drive on the York Players. Not long after, York grabbed a 2nd. It was still against the general run of the game, but Yorks No2 and their Keeper gave them the believe that the could get a result. City held out and should have scored at least another 2, especially at the death when Sarah one on one with the Keeper saw her shot saved.

Allin all a better performance overall and of course a much needed victory.

Many thanks to Robert and the girls for their welcome and the after match food.

23rd September

Goole Town  7-1 Bradford City U16s

                            Emma Houldsworth

It hasn't been the best start to the season, and it seems that circumstances had gone against us today. Firstly, the squad was down by 4 due to injury and illness. Then even before the game began, Lucy sprain her ankle and Emma H. damaged her thumb. The team took to the field, and after a scrappy start from both teams, Goole took the lead with spilt ball from the keeper falling to Gooles no9 for her to slot home. The 2nd came from a cross, but Hannah, doing what a defender does and trying to clear the danger by heading the ball clear, unfortunately headed the ball over the also advancing keeper. Goole then got their 3rd from a corner when City's defence failed to clear and Goole fired home through a crowd of players, giving the keeper no chance. After the 4th for Goole, City got themselves together and started to play with a bit more composure. Starting with a fabulous run from her own half by Laura. Linking up with Emma and Kath, with 1 and 2 touch give and goes only to snuffed out when Becky was tackle deep in to the Goole half. Laura's run seemed to spark the girls to life and one minute before half time, Bryony delivered from the right, clearing the keeper and the Goole defence, where Emma H. ghosted in to back post to get her first goal of the season. And all that with a damaged thumb.

City, after a half time team talk, dominated the first 15mins of second half and caused Gooles defence a lot of problems. Alas, no goals came and due to the Girls pushing forward found themselves vulnerable to the counter attack. A very spirited second half start ended with a further 3 goals for Goole, but, as with last week, lessens were learned and will be taken in to the next game.

As always, Mark and his players were very welcoming.

15th September

Bradford City U16s  1-10  Doncaster Belles U16s

It was never going to a repeat of pre-season, where we scored 11 goals and won games easily. Especially when we were opening our season playing Premiership Juniors. Saying that, the girls put up some good resistance, created plenty of good football and could have kept the score to something more in keeping with the flow of the game. Belles are however, a very good team and have been together as such for some years. Their pass and move football is something we are aiming to do ourselves and the signs are definately there.
The games first goal came within the first 10mins, from a good midfield strike, but City soon pegged Belles back When Captain Chelsea Faulkner got behind the Belles defence - Bryony Wraith providing from midfield - to calmly slot the ball passed the Keeper.
From there on Belles had most of the possession, but City created their own chances and had moments of possession themselves.
City's defence had to work hard and for the most part kept Belles out. Lucy Green making a couple of good saves to help them. But the Belles eventually broke through to lead 4-1 at Half time. Jade took to the field to replace Lucy and although had one or two moments to forget, showed some good keeping.
The second half didn't start well, when Belles scored within the 1st minute. Heads were starting to drop a bit now, but City keep going. The final score was not a good reflection of the game and the positives will be taken on to the next game. We can only get better.

8th September

 Nostell Miners Welfare U16  1 V 11  Bradford City U16s (F)

                                                      Chelsey Faulkner 5

                                                      Becky Fickling 2
                                                      Bryony Wraith
                                                      Amber Jones
                                                      Laura Mahoney
It would have been nice to have had a bit of a challange for the last friendly before the season begins, but the team can only play what they have in front of them. It was a chance to play the kind of passing football that girls have been looking to play. And so for the most part they did. The start of the game showed what was to come when Chelsey got the first of her 5 within 5 minutes of the kick off. The score was 10-0 at half time and included a couple a lovely strikes from Bryony and Becky. By this time, Nostell were falling like flies, with astma and headaches, but mainly embarassment. We agreed to play a further 20 mins. Nostell did rally enough to sneak a goal, and at least got a smile from one or two. Natashia seemed delighted to get on the score sheet when she took her chance well after being given a go at striker, having played right back for the most part. It was a good display by the girls and a well deserved win.
A warm and windless day. I suppose we should make the best of it.

1st September

Bradford U14/16s 5 V 3 Bradford Park Avenue U17’s (F)

With the holiday season coming to an end, the 2nd weekend of friendlies saw both the U14s and U16s with bigger squads. The U16s still missing 3 of it's prime movers, hosted an U17s Park ave side and both had to deal with windy conditions.

City started well, had most of the possession and made use of it by taking an early lead with Bryony Wraith striking from within the 18yrd box. Not long after Emma Holdsworth looped a volley in to the far corner to make it 2.

Park Ave were determined to fight back and did so. A bit of scrappy play in the City box lead to PA getting one back when they lobbed Keeper Lucy Green.Lucy, City fought back and made it 3-1 when Midfielder, Kathryn Connell struck from 25yds. New comer, Sarah Feltham showed what we can expect from her this season by scoring her debut goal from a defence splitting pass from Chelsey Faulkner. Very well taken. PA broke again, just before half time when they broke through a panicking defense to make it 4-2

Half time and even against the wind City still dominated, although PA threatened to score on occasions with some strong forward play.

Against the run of play. PA scored from an Excellent 30yds strike from the wing catching keeper Jade Szpora off her line. Certainly not the keepers fault, but a wind assisted beauty.

2 U14s were along to help the numbers. The ever reliable Sophie Lee at centre back and tenacious forward, Chelsea Morton running the channels and creating chances for the team. The 5th goal came from Sarah, chesting a cross and then volleying past the keeper.

All in all a promising game with some good football. Plenty to work on though Girls!

24th August
Bradford U14/16s 4 V 0 Brighouse U14/16s (F)

The first friendly of the season saw two side making up the numbers due to holidays. City managed a team of U16s with 3 U14s for the 1st half. Brighouse gathered an 8 U16s and 4 U14s side. A windyer day than expected saw City dominate even against the wind. At half time the score was 1-0. The goal coming from Emma moorhouse, a recent addition the the U14s, having come up from the U12s. The player of the half, being Sophie Lee, with some excellent no nosense defending.
The 2nd half saw the U14s with 3 U16s in tow. New signing, Kerrie-Jo Spencer, created problems for the Brighouse Defence with an excellent debut on the left wing and topping her performance with the 2nd goal. The 3rd goal came from U16 forward, Chelsey Faulkner, when she beat the offside trap and found herself one on one with the keeper. Only one winner. The game was top off near the end with a well taken penalty from Kathryn Connell, after Chelsey was fouled in the box.
All in all an excellent day, with some erxcellent performances, too many to mention. The future looks bright. The future is Claret and Amber!
